1Objectives

Candidates are required to fully understandMarxism, Mao Zedong Thought and the theory of socialism with Chinesecharacteristics and can thoroughly implement thescientific outlook on development.They should be patriotic and abideby laws and disciplines. Based on a sound moral integrity, a rigorous andscientific attitude towards academic work, and a strong sense of dedication,they should endeavor to contribute to the ongoing socialist modernizationdrive.


Candidates must have a firm theoretical foundationin their disciplines and systematic and specialized knowledge. They should becompetent in undertaking research in this specialty and  capable of making original contributions toother practical work. They should be proficient in a foreign language.

3Duration and Courses


(Ⅰ)Duration

 Masterstudents undergo a 3-year full-time academic program. Students cangraduate in advance or extend the study time accordingly. Length of study isnot more than 6 years.

(Ⅱ)Curriculum

The master courses include Common Courses,Discipline Basic Courses and Specialized Core Courses. Common Courses includeCommon Compulsory Courses and Common Optional Courses. The former includespolitical theories, foreign languages and so on. The latter includes research methodcourses. Discipline Basic Courses are Degree Courses. Liberal arts are set upby the first-level discipline, while the science and engineering by thesecond-level discipline that includes one research method course.SpecializedCore Courses include compulsory courses offered by subject groups and optionalcourses which pointed to research orientation. Selecting courses set up byother disciplines or specialties is encouraged.


Curriculum evaluation is divided into examinationand inspection.The examination uses a percentage grading system. Inspection isscored according to the rating system.


The total credits required for this specialtyshould be at least 34 , and the credits for each course should not be less thanthe following requirements. After completing that they will be allowed to  go into dissertation oral defense.


Political theory courses of Common Courses include Theoryand Practice of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics(2 credits),Marxismand social science methodology(Designated optional course forHumanities and Social Science postgraduates,1 credit), The Outline ofDialectics of Nature(Designated optional course for science and engineeringand medical postgraduates, 1 credit), 4 credits for public foreign language, Disciplineand Ethics in Academic Research for self-access study assessed online withno credit to be calculated.


The optional part of Common Courses include “ASecond Foreign Language”, “Computer Application” ,“Document RetrievalTechnology”, “Method of Social Research optional courses”,postgraduates can take one among the optional courses.(2 credits)


Students should get at least 9 credits forDiscipline Basic Courses; 8 credits for Specialized Core Courses(compulsorycourses);6 credits for Specialized Core Courses(optional courses);2 credits forinterdisciplinary or cross-specialty courses(optional courses).


(Ⅲ)Remedial Courses


As for interdisciplinary students (in principle, spanningdisciplines of level-one between undergraduate majors and master majors can berecognized as interdisciplinary) and master students enrolled who have theequivalent degree, the tutor decides whether to make up the relevant courses ofthis specialty according to the grades of undergraduate courses andrequirements of current specialty. The credits of the remedial courses arecalculated separately, which can not replace the prescribed credits.


(Ⅳ)Basic Literature Reading Ability Training


Postgraduates should have the basic literaturereading ability of their specialty. See the catalogue for details. Basicliterature reading ability training is a compulsory part of the education, but studentsearn no credit by taking the course. 

(Ⅴ)Research Ethics and Academic Standardization Training, Practice and Basic Abilityof  Scientific Research Training


Academic activities, practice and scientificresearch training are important parts in the education of postgraduates.Practice and scientific research training include teaching practice, scientificresearch practice and social practice. Research ethics and academicstandardization training are mainly self-study.


Academic activities include various kinds ofacademic lectures, forums, contests and so on. All master students are requiredto participate in academic activities. Teaching practice includes  teaching, tutoring, organizing classdiscussions, guiding experiment, correcting homework and experiment report,guiding graduation dissertation, etc. All master students are required toparticipate in teaching practice or scientific research practice. At the sametime, liberal arts master students are required to participate in socialactivities. Practice. Practice and basic scientific research ability trainingare necessary segments in education, but studentsearn no credit by taking the course. 

1.Academic Activities


Academic activities include academiclectures,forums,contests and so on. All master students are required to attendacademic activities.


Master students are required to attend academicdiscussions and listen to academic reports no less than 30 times; and they arerequired to attend academic conferences or academic salon papers report morethan one time.


2.Teaching Practice


The content of teaching practice includes teaching,tutoring, organizing class discussions, guiding experiment, correcting homeworkand experiment report, guiding graduation dissertation, etc. The total workloadof teaching practice or scientific research practice is more than 40 credit hours.All postgraduates are required to take part in teaching practice or scientificresearch practice.

3.Social Practice



Liberal arts master students should also take partin social practice. The minimum amount of time is two weeks.

(Ⅵ)Calculation Methods of Credits 

The credits for postgraduate courses should becalculated according to the difficulty of courses and the average class hoursof courses required by students. In principle, 18 class hours of courses for 1credit. 

Discussions, laboratory courses and other forms ofcourses can be reasonably calculated in accordance with the above principles.


The credits of common optional courses arecalculated separately. Except for the clear provisions, the credits of theabove provisions are generally not substituted.

(Ⅶ)Evaluation


Curriculum evaluation is divided into examinationand inspection.Compulsory courses require examination and optional coursesrequire examination or inspection. The examination uses a percentage gradingsystem. Inspection is scored according to the rating system.


Except for curriculum evaluation, master studentsshould also complete the evaluation of research ethics and academic standardizationtraining, basic literature reading ability training, academic activities, practiceand scientific research training and so on. The results of the above evaluationare not included in the total credit, but are included in the qualification andverification of dissertation oral defense .


The training of research ethics and academic standardizationis mainly self-study, and its evaluation is carried over the network.


The evaluation of practice and academic activities thatmaster tutors make is based on the relevant reports and materials submitted by masterstudents. Also, tutors will give qualified or unqualified evaluation accordingto students’ actual performance.


The basic literature reading ability is evaluated atthe beginning of dissertation proposal, and the basic literature readingability of postgraduates is assessed.

4Mid-term Evaluation,Requirements ofScientific Achievements and Examination of Dissertation Oral Defense

(Ⅰ)Content of Evaluation


Taking the mid-term examination at the end of the fourthsemester of postgraduate after the enrollment; at the last semester beforegraduation, the qualification of dissertation oral defense is examined for thestudents who want to graduate. The examination includes the following aspects:


1、Curriculum Review:To review whether students have got the minimum requirement for credits

2、Scientific research ability review(including scientific research achievements review):      Review master students’ curriculum statements,term papers, research reports, experimental reports,published academic papersduring the school period. Master students are encouraged to publishhigh-quality academic papers in school and publicly express their academic   opinions in academic forums, academic salonsand other academic activities for more than one time.


3、Review of the dissertation proposal: Taking theguidance group of postgraduates majoring in communication as the unit and thenhold the meeting of dissertation proposal. The content of the  dissertation proposal includes the purposeand significance of chosen titles, the current situation and developmenttendency in the field of communication at home and abroad, the progress ofwork, the existent problems, the time to complete the paper and the expectedresults, etc. After the report, the tutor of the master student will makenecessary supplements and explanations. Then, other tutors and master students presentwill be invited to give their opinions, and then revise and finalize the title.Finally, the master students themselves fill in the “ Graduate Dissertation ProposalForm,” which is submitted to the institute for examination after the tutorsmaking comments. The dissertation proposal shall be conducted within theprescribed time for mid-term evaluation. If it fails for the first time, itshall be allowed to be repeated within 1-2 months. If it fails again, it shallbe handled in accordance with the relevant provisions of the school enrollmentmanagement.


(Ⅱ)Evaluation Form

Evaluation teams take one specialty as unit. Evaluationteams are composed of master tutors, directors of teaching and researchdepartments, instructors, head teachers or political instructors. Experts fromrelated disciplines of this university can also be invited to attend, assessingmaster students in overall.


(Ⅲ)Elimination Mechanism


1、Thosewho pass the mid-term evaluation and show certain ability of scientificresearch and practice are qualified as candidates for master’s degree and cango into dissertation period.

2、Thosewho fail to complete the mid-term evaluation on time within the prescribed timeshall be considered as unqualified in mid-term evaluation.

3、Ifstudents fail to pass the mid-term examination and are obviously lack in theability of scientific research and practice, and have unhealthy moralities,their study should be terminated. It is suggested that they should drop out ofschool.


5Dissertation


(Ⅰ) the Topic of Dissertation

Before writing a dissertation, master students mustgo through careful investigation and make  serious research to understand the history,current situation and development trend of the research by reading theliterature. And then students could determine the title of their dissertation.The topic of dissertation should be innovative on the basis of previous workand is of academic value or theoretical and practical significance. Thedissertation should have new opinions on the subject they study .

(Ⅲ)Dissertation Writing


After finishing the dissertation proposal, masterstudents should make periodic reports to tutors and guiding groups according tothe work plan of the dissertation, and constantly improve the structure, ideasand viewpoints of the dissertation under the guidance of the tutors. Masterstudents must ensure that they devote no less than one year to thesis dissertationwriting in order to guarantee the quality of their dissertations.


(Ⅳ)Dissertation Review and Defense


Master degree dissertation must be reviewed by twoor three associate professors or above and assessed by “double blindness”. Onlywhen “double blind” evaluation and appraisal are qualified can students maketheir dissertation oral defense. The defense is usually scheduled from April toMay, not later than the end of May.
