Program for Master of Fine Arts(Broadcasting & Television)
I. Objectives
Withthe profound cultural foundation and the idea of concentrating on liberal artseducation and skills, the programs for Master of Fine Arts of ECNU arededicated to cultivate high-level, application-oriented talents in radio andtelevision field with good professional ethics, systematic professionalknowledge, outstanding skills and certain artistic attainments.
Theprograms also aim to provide qualified professionals that are competent inplanning, producing, operating, managing radio and television program and otherrelated works for radio and television stations, radio and televisionproduction companies, art groups, colleges and universities, radio andtelevision institutions, government cultural administrative departments andother units. The specific requirements are as follows:
1.Master the basic principles of Marxism and have good political qualities andprofessional ethics. Willing to It serve the socialist modernizationconstruction and able to make contributions to the development of art anddesign.
2.Acquire systematic professional knowledges, especially the basic principles ofradio and television industry, creativity, good comprehension and expressivenessfor art. Be equipped with professional qualities, skills and methods so as tomeet the new requirements for radio and television work brought about by thenew technological changes.
3.Have the ability to communicate in professional field with a foreign languagein order to be qualified as international specialized talent.
II. Aboutthe Applicants
Applicantsare required to have an applicable bachelor's degree or its equivalent.
III. Duration
Full-timelearning is adopted, with a three-year learning period which can be extended tono more than five years. In principle, applications for early graduation arenot accepted.

V. TrainingMode
Becauseof the characters of fine arts, the programs are designed to focus on practicewhile also give consideration to theory education and quality build-up. The classroomteaching, skill training and artistic practice are combined together. Accordingto the requirements of the program and the principle of teaching students inaccordance with their aptitude, tutors should formulate a personal trainingplan for every student after their admission. The specific methods are asfollows:
1.Highlighted practical courses. Efforts are made to provide conditions forartistic practices. For instance, various practice bases are built to ensurethat the hours and credits of practical courses account for no less than 60% ofcompulsory courses.
2.Tutorial system. Tutors and tutor groups are both responsible to the students.Full play should be given to the leading role of teachers and guidance groupsand the dominant role of students' individual learning.
3.Binary tutor system. To blend practice into course, industry experts are hiredto be enterprise tutors to guide practical courses and strengthen thecultivation of students' artistic ability. share the responsibility in thedevelopment of the students.
4.Creative course design. Face-to-face teaching, independent study, seminar andpractice are combined in the classroom in order to help students formulatecomprehensive practical abilities in art.
5.International education. A joint training mechanism is built in cooperationwith well-known overseas universities to select qualified students forjoint-degree programs in the way of "1 + 1 + 1" (the second academicyear is overseas). The study and practice of students studying for doubledegrees abroad and exchange students overseas shall be settled in accordancewith the relevant regulations of the school and the university.
VI. AboutPrograms and Credit
Atleast 52 credits must be obtained to graduate, including 10 for common requiredcourses, 32 for compulsory courses (consisting of basic courses, practicalcourses, which account for no less than 60%, and internship) and 10 foroptional courses.
1.Common required courses focus on improving the overall quality of students,expanding their vision of aesthetics, and strengthening their ability for workunderstanding and international exchange and cooperation.
2.Compulsory courses focus on theoretic knowledge, academic exploration,comprehensive artistic accomplishment and ability.
3.Practical courses are practical application oriented, with the promotion ofcomprehensive quality and application skills as the core and the enhancement instudents' awareness and ability to study and solve practical problems as thepurpose.
4.Optional courses are divided into professional optional courses and commonoptional courses. With a wide range of contents and forms, it provides studentswith more choices and enough space for their personality development. Students areallowed to choose courses according to their interests and major.

VII. Requirementsfor Graduation
Thepractical ability in radio and television industry is emphasized in this major.Graduation assessment, including professional ability demonstration anddissertation defense, will be carried out after the required courses arecompleted and the required credits are obtained.
Thedemonstration shows the professional skill while the dissertation defense isthe reflection of the comprehensive quality, theoretical thinking andelaboration ability.
Thewhole process will be transparent, with the dissertation defense (30%) carriedout after the demonstration (70%). The demonstration must be artistic,exploratory and original, and show the ability and achievement while the dissertationshould be closely related to professional practice, and should contain creativethinking and theoretical interpretation. The ownership of students' practicalworks belongs to the school.
A. Requirementsfor demonstration
Asa special display of professional ability, the graduation work must be Thespecific requirements for each major are as follows:
1. DigitalMedia Art Orientation
Independentlycreate a short film in the form of story or art documentary. It must containrelatively complete plots, with distinct characters and a length of no lessthan 30 minutes. It can also be created in the form of MV/MTV or film andtelevision advertisements. Requirements are as follows: (1) Creation andproduction of works should be completed independently as directors orphotographers or 2D/3D special effects producers or producers; (2) No less thantwo MV works with a length of more than 3 minutes, and no less than threeadvertising works with a length of no less than 30 or 30 seconds.
2. Broadcasting& Hosting Orientation
Writea draft, select interviewees, organize, and record a broadcasting and hostingworks above straight 30 minutes. The work must be original, with correct views,complete structure, rich content, abundant pictures, clear sound and distinctivefeatures. It must be academic and innovative and show the host's good control overthe program and communication ability.
B. AcademicDissertation
Thedissertation should focus on the graduation work to make professional analysisand theoretical interpretation. The works and dissertations should study newphenomena and new laws, and put forward new thoughts and new methods. Theanalysis must dig into the practice of graduation work and its value, which can’tbe separated. It is necessary to demonstrate both art and academics achievementsin the dissertation, which must be finished independently under the guidance oftutors. Plagiarism and academic misconduct of any kind are forbidden. Thestandard and style of dissertation should comply with the Basic Requirements for the Writing of Master's Degree Dissertationof East China Normal University. The body of dissertation should be no lessthan 10,000 words (excluding spectral examples and charts).
C. GraduationAssessment Committee
TheGraduation Assessment Committee consists of 3 to 5 experts with the title of asenior professional post in relevant fields.
Theevaluation is divided into four categories: Excellent: ≥ 90; Good: 89-75;Qualified: 74-60; Unqualified: ≤59
VIII. Examinationof Thesis Defense Qualification
Beforethe thesis defense, the examination should be carried out to review if requiredcourses and professional practice are complete, and to reexamine the dissertationproposal.
IX. Conferringof Degrees
Studentswho finished the courses, obtained enough credits, passed the thesis defenseand met the relevant regulations of school roll management shall be permittedto graduate and be issued with their master's degree certificates. Professionaldegree assessment groups, the professional degree evaluation sub-committee ofthe university, and the degree evaluation committee of the university shallconfer a professional degree in fine arts and issue a professional master'sdegree certificate after their examination and approval.
