1.      Objectives

This program is tocultivate high-level professional talents of journalism and communication whocan apply Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought and theoretical system ofsocialism with Chinese characteristics to think and analyze major theories and tosolve practical problems that journalism and communication profession faces. Itis to nurture students with comprehensive development in moral, intelligenceand sports. It is to cultivate students with a solid professional foundation,high competence and high quality and to cultivate high-level and professionaltalents of journalism and communication who actively make efforts to contributeto the nation and to develop journalism and communication profession.

       PhD students of Communication Studiesprogram are required to possess strong ability of scientific research andpractice, and to possess innovative spirit.

       PhD students of Communication Studiesshould know the research achievements and latest trend in professional field. Standingin the academic frontier, they can apply advanced research methods and means toresearch with creativity. High-quality scientific research results orhigh-quality practical results are necessary during the study. PhD students arerequired to master a foreign language and know a second foreign language. Moreover,PhD students are required to possess professional dedication, and to be decent,with mental and physical health. After graduation, PhD students can soon becomethe backbone in teaching and scientific research, or in the sector ofjournalism and communication.

3.Duration, training mode and courses

       (1) Duration

       The duration of study for PhD students isfour years and the maximum length of study is no more than 6 years.

       (2) Training mode

       Training of PhD students is thecombination of direction of supervisors and group training.

       (3) Courses

       Courses for PhD students include public courses, fundamental courses and specialized courses.PhD students is required to get at least 6 credits of public compulsory coursesand public elective courses, including political theories and foreignlanguages. Fundamental courses are also the compulsory units of study. Specializedcourses include specialized compulsory courses offered by this discipline and specializedelective courses towards the research. The total credits in fundamental coursesand specialized (compulsory) courses should be completed at least 5 credits.Moreover, at least one specialized course (elective) should be completed andnot less than 2 credits is necessary. PhD students are required to complete atleast 15 credits during the study.


According tothe professional training needs and according to the courses that PhD studentshave taken, supervisors can require PhD students to complete some other courses.

(4)Assessment

       Assessment includes exams and otherassessment methods. Compulsory courses require exams. Elective courses includeexams and other assessment methods. Exams will use centesimal system toevaluate results. Other assessment methods will use grading system to evaluate.Courses will be arranged in the first academic year in principle. The examsshould be completed before the PhD dissertation proposal.

       Besides curriculum assessment, PhDstudents are also required to pass assessment of research ethics training, of academicnorms, of the training of reading fundamental journals and books, and of academicactivities. The assessment will not be calculated into the total credits, butit will be one part of checking PhD students’ eligibility for attendingdissertation defense.

       PhD students should learn research ethicsand academic norms by themselves, and should complete online assessment.

       The department and supervisors willprovide a fundamental bibliography of professional books for PhD students ofeach major and will assess PhD students’ ability of reading the fundamentalbibliography of professional books.

       During thestudies, PhD students should attend a certain number of academic activities,such as giving academic lectures, joining academic symposiums and attendingacademic lectures. The specific requirements for these activities are decided bythe department and supervisors.

4.Training of scientific research and innovation ability

Training of scientific researchand innovation ability is one crucial part of the training plan for PhDstudents. Through attending supervisor’s scientific research projects and undertakingresearch tasks independently, PhD students should grasp the means, methods andskills of scientific research and improve the ability and academic level ofindependently engaging in scientific research. PhD students are encouraged toapply for a variety of scientific research funds and to strengthen training ofscientific research. PhD students are inspired to make an innovativeachievement; outstanding research for doctoral dissertation will be supportedby special funds. PhD students are encouraged and supported by ECNU to publishpapers in international high-level academic journals to improve PhD students’ability of presenting academic achievements in the international stage.

A PhD student can apply for adegree after he has met the requirements of publishing scientific researchachievements during the studies.


5.Assessment during the studies

Annual assessment. At the end ofeach academic year, PhD students should report supervisors and steering groupsthe progress of study and research over the past year. The department andsupervisors issue opinions and then report to the graduate school for a record.

Qualification exams. Only bycompleting all curriculums can PhD students take the qualification exams. Onlyby passing the qualification exams can PhD students begin writing their PhDdissertation.

Review of dissertation proposal.PhD students should complete required course credits in the first academic yearand finish dissertation proposal, which will be evaluated by the department andgraduate school.

Requirements for academicresearch achievements.

(1)    Givingacademic lectures in the levels above school and faculties at least 2 times;

(2)    Attendingacademic symposiums or academic lectures at least 30 times;

(3)    Atleast one requirement for scientific research achievements below should be metby PhD students during the studies.

1.      1academic paper is published in periodicals included in SSCI, A&HCI with theauthor’s first affiliation as ECNU, and the student is the first author or thestudent’s supervisor is the first author with the student as the second author.

2.      1academic paper is published in authority periodicals in the first level ofdisciplines on humanities with the author’s first affiliation as ECNU, and thestudent is the first author or the student’s supervisor is the first authorwith the student as the second author.

3.      2academic papers are published in periodicals included in CSSCI (includingExpanded Version) with author’s first affiliation as ECNU, and the student isthe first author.

PhD students can apply for adegree after he has met the requirements of publishing scientific researchachievements during the studies.

Defense Qualification Checking.Dissertation defense eligibility should be examined before Apr.10 of the fourthyear for PhD students graduating in the fall, and before Oct.31 of the fourthyear for PhD students graduating in the spring. The qualification examinationfor doctoral dissertation defense is mainly to examine the course study, credit,scientific research achievements, and the participation of academic activities.

PhD students intending to applyfor a dissertation defense must pass the pre-defense of the dissertationorganized by the school. Teachers, supervisors and members of steering group ofthe department will listen to the comprehensive report of progress andachievements given by the applicants, and will put forward advice of furthermodifying and improving the dissertation, and determine whether the applicantcan participate in the defense as scheduled. Pre-defense of the dissertationmust be completed before Dec.10 of the third year by PhD students graduating inthe fall and completed before Mar. 31 of the third year by students graduatingin the spring.

6.Dissertation

Under the guidance of thesupervisor, PhD students should independently complete the doctoraldissertation. The doctoral dissertation should be pioneering and innovative.The doctoral dissertation should be leading and innovative. The main part of thedissertation should be innovative research results made by the author. Thedoctoral dissertation should reflect the PhD students' ability of independentlydoing scientific research, solid theoretical foundation, and systematic anddeep professional knowledge about the discipline. The dissertation should becompleted by PhD students in at least two years during the studies.

Supervisors and the departmentshould attach importance to all phases involving with the dissertation such astopic selection of dissertation, dissertation proposal, examination of theproject and pre-defense, to ensure the quality of dissertation.
